Types and differences of insulators

2025-04-25

Insulators are devices installed between conductors at different potentials or between conductors and grounding components that can withstand voltage and mechanical stress.

An insulator is a component used to increase creepage distance. Typically made of glass, ceramic, or composite materials, it is widely used in power systems. The following are the main types of insulators and their differences:

  1. Suspension Insulators: Used in high-voltage and ultra-high-voltage transmission lines, they suspend or tension conductors, insulating them from the towers. Suspension insulators have high electromechanical strength and are suitable for various voltage levels. They can be further divided into disc-type suspension insulators and rod-type suspension insulators.

  2. Post Insulators: Mainly used for insulation and mechanical fixation of power plants, substations busbars, and electrical equipment. They are divided into pin-type post insulators and post-type post insulators. The former is mostly used in low-voltage distribution lines, while the latter is mostly used in high-voltage substations.

  3. Porcelain Insulators: Made of electrical porcelain, the surface is covered with porcelain glaze to improve mechanical strength and waterproof performance.

  4. Glass Insulators: Made of tempered glass, they have a self-exploding characteristic, meaning they will automatically break when cracked or electrically punctured, eliminating the need for zero-value detection.

  5. Composite Insulators: Composed of a glass fiber resin core rod and an organic material sheath, they are lightweight, have high tensile strength, and good anti-fouling flashover performance, but their anti-aging ability is slightly weaker.

In addition, there are anti-fouling insulators, DC insulators, low-voltage insulators, and high-voltage insulators, etc., each with different characteristics and uses. When selecting insulators, the specific application scenario and requirements must be considered.
